Onam festival of Kerala is one of the most important and most awaited festivals in Kerala. It occurs during the end of the Monsoon season in the month of Chingam as per Malaylam calendar and that is between August and September months. This is also known as the harvest festival. Harvested crop is served to the Gods and the ancient king Mahabali. It is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm
Onam festival is celebrated to honour the kind- hearted and very much loved demon king Mahabali. It is believed that he returns to Kerala during this festival. According to Vaishnava mythology, King Mahabali defeated the Gods and began ruling all the three worlds.
To welcome king Mahabali, people make the carpet of flowers which is known as ‘Pookkalam’ and lay infront of the house. Every day new flowers are added to the Pookkalam. Colorful ‘Rangoli’ is also prepared. Along with this, many traditional rituals are performed.
Onam celebrations include Vallam kali (boat races ), Puli kali (tiger dances ), Pokkalam (flower rangoli ), Onathappan (worship ), Onam kali (tug of war ), Thumbi Thullal (women’s dance ), Kummati kali (mask dance ), Onathallu (martial arts ), Onavillu ( music ), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings ), Onapottan (costumes ), Atthachamayam ( folk songs and dance ), and other celebrations.

CONCLUSION
Onam is celebrated as New Year in Kerala. Irrespective of caste, creed and religion, people sing and dance to enjoy this festival. People clean their houses as it is done during Diwali festival. Street and houses are lit up. Families buy gifts, new clothes etc for friends, children and also get new clothes for elders.
Onam celebration displays the entire culture of Kerala. The ten days of harvest festival is celebrated with a grand royal parade which shows the culture of Kerala with 50 floats and 100 tableau. One can visit Kerala to enjoy holidays and can understand the rich culture. Government of KERALA declares 4 days of State holidays for Onam but the festival is celebrated for 10 days.
