DITIONARY MEANING OF LITERACY:-

When used as noun-

the ability to read and write

DEFINITION OF LITERACY FROM WIKIPEDIA

Literacy is popularly understood as an ability to read and write at least one method of writing, an understanding reflected by mainstream dictionaries. In this view , illiteracy would be considered to be the inability to read and write.

DEFINITION LITERACY: UNESCO:-

Literacy is the ability to identify , understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts

Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in their community and wider society ( UNESCO,2oo4; 2017 )

THREE KEY FEATURES OF THE UNESCO’ DEFINITION OF LITERACY:-

  • Literacy is about the uses people make of it as a means of communication and expression, through a variety of media.
  • Literacy is plural, being practiced in particular contexts for particular purposes and using specific languages;
  • Literacy involves a continuum of learning measured at different proficient levels.

INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY:-

International Literacy Day takes place on September 8, every year to raise awareness and concern for literacy problems that exist within our own local communities as well as globally.

International literacy day was founded by proclamation of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, in 1966 “ to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights”.

International Literacy Day brings ownership of the challenges of illiteracy back home to local communities where literacy begins, one person at a time.

ACTIVITIES:-

BY INDIVIDUALS-

  • On this day organizations and and individuals take charge and use their literacy to encourage and assist those who are facing difficulties on how to read and write.
  • Students and employed people volunteer to tour children in the community, books are generously donated to libraries, and a student’s tuition and learning are sponsored to launch their life-long success.

ACTIVITIES BY INSTITUTION, GOVERNMENT AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION:-

  • They campaign for literacy at the grassroots level.
  • They host think tanks and discussion forums to strategize and implement the best policies for the eradication of illiteracy.
  • They host fundraisers for the cause.
  • A theme is set for International Literacy Day every year. This is used as a way to build awareness around specific issues.

Now, it’s time to read and enjoy the meaningful poems …..

(POEMS)

YOU CAN HAVE LOT OF SELF- CONFIDENCE

If you can not read

If you can not write

If you don’t have general knowledge

If you can not communicate well

If you can not communicate effectively

Tell me, what is the value of your life?

So, literacy is at the heart of basic education for all.

If you are literate and educated

You can have lot of self- confidence

And you can lead a life of your own choice.

A BETTER SOCIETY

Literacy and education

Helps to eradicate superstition

Also very much essential

For eradicating poverty

Reducing child abuse

And reducing child mortality.

Literacy and education

Helps to think positively

Helps to think about gender equality

Gives knowledge of population explosion

Helps to think of birth control as a solution.

Literacy, education and knowledge

Makes one capable and skillful

Gives the idea of sustainable development

For the people of the society and nation

Ultimately, literacy, education, knowledge and wisdom

Makes people capable enough

To think of peace, prosperity through democracy

To build a better society.

BEST POSSIBLE LIFE TO HUMAN KIND

Every family, every society

Every region, every nation

Should think about literacy and education

Always it will be better

To provide compulsory and free education.

Let us make cent percent people literate as a human right

Use it as a tool for personal improvement

A way, a means to achieve social and human development.

Let us produce good human-beings

Skillful, law-abiding citizens

With progressive thought and competitive mind

To bring the best possible life for human kind.

CAN ANYONE STOP US?

If we become a cent percent literate nation

If equality and progress is our mission

Can any one stop us from our growth and promotion

No, no, no…no body can stop

We can certainly become a great nation.

A GREAT BEAUTY

Literacy is a powerful weapon

Literacy can bring understanding and unity

It enhances our dignity.

Literacy builds bridge to overcome misery

So: free education to all should be made compulsory.

Literacy is a powerful weapon

Education, knowledge and wisdom are powerful weapons

Let us utilize them to change the world

Let us think of world peace and world unity

If we all come together it will be a great beauty.

CONCLUSION:-

Hope, you liked and enjoyed the Literacy Poems On International Literacy Day. For kind information, International Literacy Day was first celebrated in 8th September 1967 to spread awareness about the importance of literacy to people.

Every year, this day is celebrated with different theme. According to UNESCO “literacy is the best remedy” literacy is the gateway to brighter future.

People can improve their condition if they can read, write and get employment. There are also many programs run by Governments for skill development. They also have training programs for adult population.

Illiteracy is a big problem, this can be solved through dedicated involvement of students, general public, institutions, NGOs, government bodies and volunteers. Let us contribute in our own way to solve this big problem and strive towards a better life and better society.
