- UN General Assembly at the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment in 1972 declared June 5th as World Environment Day. This led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme.
- In 1974 in Spokane, USA, the first World Environment Day was celebrated.
- Every year a different country hosts this day with a theme and slogan. China was the host country for 2019 and the slogan was ‘Beat air pollution.’
- In the year 2020 the slogan was ‘Biodiversity’ and the hosts were Columbia and Germany.
- This theme of Biodiversity was chosen on looking into the recent bush fires, locust infestations in East-Africa and the Covid 19 Pandemic.
- Pakistan will host World Environment Day 2021 in partnership with UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The theme chosen for this year is ‘Eco system restoration’ and focus on resetting our relation with nature. It will also mark the formal launch of the UN Decade on Eco system 2021-2030.
- World Environment Day involves governments, businesses, environmentalists as well as the citizens to promote greener future.
