Welcome to one of the most famous and powerful poems of American Poet and Civil Rights Activists Maya Angelou.
This poem “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” in Hindi (Translated) very much reflects the society and the times she lived in.
This poem is the vivid expression of the society then – some are ‘caged’ and some are ‘free’.
This poem was first published in 1983 in the collection Shaker, Why Don’t You Sing? Is a celebration of Black resilience and dignity? Beautifully and powerfully a simple metaphor has been used.
Maya Angelou emphatically evokes the pain and rage of the person who is oppressed by contrasting their suffering with the carefree and willful ignorance of one which is free.
Maya Angelou first used this ‘caged bird” motif (meaning – a decorative image or design, especially repeated one forming a pattern), (a dominant or recurring idea in an artistic work) in the title of her 1969 autobiography, I know why the caged bird sings, and she originally brought or drew the image from the 1899 poem “Sympathy” by the black writer Paul Laurence.
SUMMARY OF THE POEM :
There are two birds in the poem. The first bird is free. It represents the white American. The second bird is caged. It represents the black American.
The free bird enjoys and leads a life of dignity, grandeur and a life of infinite possibilities and opportunities.
The caged bird leads a life of fear, longing subjugation.
The free bird continues to enjoy life and broadens his horizons.
The caged bird continues to lead a pathetic life, continues to sink deeper and deeper into the negation of his very existence.
But the caged bird still continues to sing of his desire for freedom…..

Caged Bird

A free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill

जबतक बहाव (करेंट) खतम नहीं हो जाता
और उसके पंखों को डुबो देता है
नारंगी सूरज की किरणों में
और आकाश पर दावा करने का हिम्मत करता है।
लेकिन वह पक्षी जो डंठल खाता है
अपने संकीर्ण पिंजरे के नीचे
शायद ही कभी देख सकते
अपने क्रोध की सलाखों के पार
उसके पंख क़तर दिए गए हैं और
उसके पैर बंधे हुए हैं
इसलिए वह अपना गला खोल देता है गानों के लिए।
बंदी पक्षी गाता है
भयभीत कंपित ध्वनि से
अज्ञात चीजों के बारे में
पर अभी भी तरस रहा है
और उसकी धुन सुनाई देती है
दूर पहाड़ी पर
क्योंकि बंदी पक्षी
आजादी के लिए गाता है।
मुक्त पक्षी सोचता है एक और मंद समीर के लिए
और नरम हल्के पूर्वी/व्यापारिक हवा के झोंके सरसराते पेड़ों में वह कर जाती हैं
और मोटे कीड़े इंतेजार करते भोर के एक चमकदार उज्ज्वल लाँन पर
और आकाश पे अपना अधिकार जमा लेता है
किन्तु एक बंदी पक्षी सपनों की मजार पर खड़ा है
उसकी प्रतिछाया चिल्लाता है एक दुःस्वप्न की चिख पर
उसके पंख कतीत/कटे हुए हैं और उसके पैर बंधे
तो वह गाने के लिए अपना गला खोल देता है।

The poem “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” or “Caged Bird” is a powerful and painful poem with universal appeal. Whether we like it or not, this world is divided into rich and poor. There are haves and have not’s, ruled and ruler. This is the situation everywhere, in every country and every society.
Everybody wants to improve their own lives. There is a struggle for this. Everyone wants to lead a descent life with freedom, equal rights and opportunities to grow. But it is seen that it is not easy to get them. There is struggle; there is fight by people to acquire freedom.
In my opinion, this is a must read poem for freedom loving individuals…..
