DICTIONARY MEANING OF SKILL:-

noun

1. the ability to do something well, especially because of training practice, etc.

( It takes great skill to make such beautiful jewellery. )

1. an ability that you need in order to do a job, an activity, etc. well

WHAT IS SKILL DEVELOPMENT:-

Skill development means a process which enables trainees and working age people to gain access to dexterity, knowledge and ability, career ethics and good working attitude by skill training, establishing skill standards, and other related activities.

Now let us read two stories high lighting the Importance of Skill Development….

STORY – THE IMPORTANCE OF SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Once upon a time, a well built wood cutter went with his axe and asked for a job from a timber merchant. The merchant really wanted a wood cutter. So he gave the job.

The wood cutter was very happy. The pay was really good. The work conditions were also good. For this reason, the wood cutter was determined to do his best.

The merchant showed him the area where he was supposed to work.

The first day , the wood cutter brought 22 trees. The merchant was happy and “congratulated” him and said continue to do in this way.

The wood cutter was motivated by the words of the merchant. He tried harder the next day, but he only could bring 18 trees.

The third day the wood cutter tried even harder, but he only could bring 11 trees.

Day after day he was bringing less and less trees. “I must be losing my strength”, the wood cutter thought. He went to the merchant and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on….

“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the merchant asked.

“Sharpen?” I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees.

With this question from the merchant, the wood cutter could understand and realized why he was not able cut more trees.

( This story gave us a picture of decreasing efficiency of the wood cutter )

Now, let us read another story with the title- ‘SHARPEN YOUR AXE’ related to two different wood cutters. This story will clearly tell about skill development….

STORY – SHARPEN YOUR AXE

John, a wood cutter, worked for a company for five years but never got a raise in his salary. The company hired Bill and within a year he got a raise in his salary.

John was surprised and resented Bill’s getting a raise after only a year and went to his boss to talk about it.

The boss said, “You are still cutting the same number of trees you were cutting five years ago. We are a result – oriented company and would be happy to give you a raise if your productivity goes up.”

John went back, started hitting harder and putting in longer hours but he still wasn’t able to cut more trees. He went back to his boss and told him his dilemma. The boss told John to go to Bill and talk to him. “May be there is something Bill knows that you and I don’t.”

John went to Bill and asked him how he managed to cut more trees?

Bill answered, “After every tree I cut, I take a break for two minutes and sharpen my axe. Then, he asked when was the last time you sharpened your axe?”

Let us all remember that our past glory and education don’t count much. Investment in Skill Development Programme is must for every individual or every employee of a company.

Now a days it is seen that in different areas of every profession new techniques and skills are emerging at regular interval or almost everyday. We should not stop learning and continuously enhance our skill and acquire new skill. Up – gradation of skill is must for better survival in this competitive world.

Development of skills are generally required in personal attributes, personality traits. At the same time the advantages of Skill Development are… to increase in proficiency, to grow skill set, achieve task in less time with more and better result, increase in performance level.
