Fire and Ice

Robert Frost – 1874-1963

Some say the world will end in fire,

Some say in ice.

From what I’ve tasted of desire

I hold with those who favor fire.

But if it had to perish twice,

I think I know enough of hate

To know that for destruction ice

Is also great

And would suffice.

हिन्दी अनुवाद : Fire and Ice

CENTRAL IDEA OF THE POEM :

The theme of the poem “Fire and Ice” by Robert Frost is the perennial or age old question of whether the world will end in fire or in ice.

The poet tells that both the options have the sufficient capacity to end this world.

The poet also shares the general and common belief that everything that exists will end one day. But people are divided on the way of destruction i.e. by fire or ice.

From the point of view of human emotion, the element of ‘Fire’ stands for patience, desires and love. Uncurbed, unbridled and unruly patience and desires can cause the end of the world.

‘Ice’ represents hate or cold. If this world has to be destroyed twice, the ice can serve that purpose. Hate, born of cold reasoning makes a man insensitive to feelings.

Hatred can make our mind numb. Cold thoughts and reasoning make us, insensitive and cruel. Therefore, the poet thinks that ‘Ice’ or ‘Hate’ can be a great, strong and important cause for the destruction of the world.

CONCLUSION :

Fire and Ice Poem by Robert Frost translated in Hindi by me is a strong symbolic poem.

The poet symbolizes that ‘fiery desires’ are capable of destruction of this world. The fiery desires of domination will bring about decay in final feelings for each other. There will be no unity. There will be no discovery and invention. People will not come together for constructive purpose and world will slowly and steadily come to an end.

Similarly ‘icy hatred’ will equally damage this earth. Ice has extremely low temperature. It will not allow living creatures to grow and the life on earth will slowly vanish.

Both Fire and Ice have the power to destroy this world. Symbolically, the poet hints that we human beings may be wiped out by these two elements.

Looking into the destructive power, we all have to be careful. Fire can be considered as ‘ego’, Ice can be considered ‘harshness’. Both have the destructive power. Only love, understanding, peace, cooperation can save this world…. Let us be lovely and lovable human beings.
