At the beginning itself, the poet asks the audience and readers to hold fast to dreams. This emphasizes the importance of dreams. And also asks to keep dreaming because if dreams die, life is a broken-wing bird that cannot fly.

In this poem bird is used as a metaphor. Here, it symbolizes hope, ecstasy and liberty. And broken-wing bird means hopelessness, joylessness and slavery. So, without dreams life cannot be said as life, a person becomes purposeless and hopeless. Therefore, it is important to keep dreaming and dreaming.

The poet Langston Hughes has used another metaphor in this poem – barren field frozen with snow. Here, he compares life without a dream is like a life, which is a barren field ,frozen with snow.

In literary sense barren field and snow represent lifelessness because a barren field has no crops and is unproductive and is of no use.

The dreams and the hopes encourage people to invent new thing, discover innovative ideas for betterment of their lives. It is the dream which gives man the energy and strength to struggle.
